Bakers in Leicester?
« on: 12:44:00, 22/06/10 »
I visit Leicester regularly, and it's a bit of a foodie paradise in many respects - a fantastic veg market, and the fish market looks good too! What I haven't come across is a good local baker that does a good range of fresh bread. Carluccio's do a selection of Italian breads, but they're not *that* good and are a bit over-priced.

Any recommendations?

This thread has made me think... we used to have a number of coombs and other bakers all over the place...what ever happened to them all!

Well, my quest for good bread is having some success :D

In Queen's Road, there are two delis - one is Christopher James, who tell me they do specialist breads such as Ukrainian rye from time to time, and will happily take an order. A few doors along is another deli (and cafe), which has a good range of interesting breads - they always have nice ciabatta rolls for 50p each, and things like olive or tomato bread too, and it was pretty good quality.

There's a deli in Allendale road too who get bread on Thursdays (I think).

Of course, I'm sure the new Waitrose opening before too long in London Road will have a decent selection too - but I'd rather support local businesses than supermarkets where feasible :)

I remember the delicious warm cobs from the bakers on Queens Road. Sorry can't remember their name. But they used to have a good selection of different breads on the shelf. We are talking many years ago though.
