Coverpage of book by a colleague of mine (Dr.Christina Bashford) published in 2007. Christina kindly cited me in it for my help on John Ella's family background.

Coverpage of one of my books (2002 edition), all copies soldout.
Note: the only Anglo-Saxon helmet found in Yorkshire, once the lower part of  Anglo-Saxon Northumbria is bottom on the right. There is another Anglo-Saxon helmet picture inside the book.

Replica made in 1912 of the original Wymeswold Chalice ( made in 1512, possibly in York ).
This replica was sold by Bonham Auctioneers this year (2012).  The original was used in St.Mary's church in Wymeswold for Communion at least in the first quarter of the 19th century and amongst the parishioners were members of the Ella family, e.g., Lord James Ella and his Lady Elizabeth of the Manor House.

John Ella's Musical Union Logo c.1862. This was on his letter-headings for number 18 Hanover Square, London. His abode at number 9 Victoria Square in London is where he died in 1888.

The musician Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847): The musician John Ella used a baton and Felix was urged by him to also use one for a forthcoming Philharmonic engagement.

The musician Anton G. Rubinstein (1929-1894).
Picture (one of three known by me) of a young Anton. Later he became a colleague of the musician John Ella and was at John's Musical Union sessions.

Dear Mr. Ella,

I tried to send you an email but I was not able to find your address.
My name is Luigi Bellofatto and I read that you made a very interesting on the musician John Ella, the well known English violinist and concert director. As I am writing on a small article on Beethoven watches, I realized that a watch belonged to Beethoven was in possession of G.B. Davy.
As Mr. Davy was in relation with John Ella in many points, I was wondering if this Beethoven watch was sold by Ella to Davy.
In 1873 George Davy acquired the painting from John Ella, Director of The Musical Union in London. (George was also a member of the Musical Union). Hector Berlioz was a close personal friend. I am guessing that George Davy may have also acquired the Beethoven watch and other memorabilia from John Ella who had intimate contact with a circle of aristocrats, musicians and composers in England and Europe.

A Mozart painting, that was owned by Ella, was then in possession of G.B. Davy. Then it was auctioned by Mary Davy at Puttick and Simpson's in 1925. It was again sold in 1965 by Christies for 4500. In 1985 the painting was in a private collection in Glyndebourne, East Sussex. You may know that Glyndebourne is famous for its annual festival of opera music. I think it may be owned by the Directors of the Glydebourne Trust as the painting featured on the front of their festival programme in 1991.  This is just one of 14 portraits made in Mozart's lifetime. It was painted by Pompeo Batoni of Rome has now been discredited as the artist and it has been re-attributed to a French contemporary, Louis Gabriel Blanchet. It is thought to have been painted in 1770 and it is on the front of the title page of the book of Ella, Musical Sketches - Abroad and at Home.

As you know a lot on John Ella, do you which Beethoven memorabilia was owned by Ella?

I thank you for your kind help and I send you my best greetings from Italy.

Luigi Bellofatto

Hello Luigi,
Thank you for your message.
I agree with you about the correct artist for the painting of a young Mozart.
I am not aware of what other Mozart or Beethoven items John Ella had or who now has his pocket-watch.
More on J.Ella of possible interest: Go to google.co.uk and type Raymond E.O.Ella in their searchbox and click, then go to page for my Flickr photostream and click.
Kind regards,
R.E.O.Ella.

Sepia-toned picture of the musician John Ella in 1851 by the artist Charles Baugniet (lithographic process, other copies I know of are only in black and white).
