Letter from the musician John Ella's mother Catherine (also known by her short pet-form name Kitty) to the Royal Society of Musicians of Great Britain in support for her son's membership. John became a member on the 2nd. of Jan., 1825. (His father had died in 1822).

Settlement Certificate (not a removal order) for a branch of the Ella family moving from Kirkby (now Kirby) Knowle (near Thirsk) in Yorkshire to Loughborough in 1774. The John Ella and his wife Sarah mentioned were the grandparents of the musician John Ella who was later Leicester-born in 1802.  The Richard [born Thirsk in 1769] mentioned when he became an adult he married Kitty Goddard of Leicester in 1801, they being the musician John Ella's parents. Also mentioned in the certificate are two other small children Mary and Ursula, the musician's aunties. Document reproduced with permission from the Leicestershire, Leicester & Rutland Record Office, ref. DE1834/1/10.
(There were two Michael Ella's, one being Richard's uncle who had before c.1774 moved from Yorkshire to Leicestershire. The other Michael Ella (senior) and his wife Ursula (senior; she not mentioned in certificate) were of Kirby Knowle in Yorkshire and grandparents of Mary, Richard and Ursula (junior; mentioned).

Book: Aella and Aelle  (1982 ed.), all copies sold-out yet some may be available in selected UK libraries.

Coverpage of another one of my books "Four Anglian Kings of Northumbria", etc., (2002 edition), all copies soldout (some copies in selected UK libraries).
Note: the only Anglo-Saxon helmet found in Yorkshire, once the lower part of  Anglo-Saxon Northumbria is bottom on the right. There is another Anglo-Saxon helmet picture inside the book.

A black and white image of J.Ella's personal coat-of-arms. The blazon* with tinctures are: Per Saltire Or (gold) and Gules (red) 4 crescents counterchanged. This shield earlier would not have had the added crest of a knight's helmet or a lion and no forms of side-supporters. It was also attributed to the first Bretwalda named Ella (Aelle, Aella, etc.), a king of the South-Saxons (Sussex).
